Time is of the essence

The first three hours are most critical when trying to locate a missing child.  According to the U.S. Department of Justice, of the children abducted by strangers and murdered, 75% are killed within the first three hours.
 
These are the Facts
  • Over 2,100 children go missing every day. That is one child every 40 seconds.
  • In the U.S. alone, nearly 800,000 children are reported missing each year.
  • Each year, 500,000 children go missing without being reported to authorities
  • Teenagers are most frequent victims of stereotypical kidnappings and non-family abductions.
  • There are over 750,000 registered sex offenders in the United States. This figure has reportedly increased 23% over the past five years. It is estimated that 100,000 are non-compliant and their location is unknown.
  • 28% of registered sex offenders will likely be convicted of a crime in the next three years.
  • The average serial child molester has between 360-380 victims in his lifetime.
  • Approximately 70% of sexual offenders of children have between 1 and 9 victims; 20-25% have 10 to 40 victims.
Online Statistics
  • Approximately 93% of all Americans between 12 and 17 years old are internet users (as of 2007)[i]
  • 1 in 5 U.S. teenagers who regularly log on to the Internet says they have received an unwanted sexual solicitation via the Web. Solicitations were defined as requests to engage in sexual activities or sexual talk, or to give out personal sexual information. (only 25% of those told a parent) [ii]
  • About 30% of the victims of Internet sexual exploitation are boys.
  • Internet sexual predators tend to fall between the ages of 18 and 55, although some are older or younger. Their targets tend to be between the ages of 11 and 15.
  • In 100% of the cases, teens that are the victims of sexual predators have gone willingly to meet with them[iii].
  • Teens are willing to meet with strangers: 16% of teens considered meeting someone they've only talked to online and 8% have actually met someone they only knew online[v].
  • 75% of children are willing to share personal information online about themselves and their family in exchange for goods and services[vi].
According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC)
  • The single most valuable tool in finding a missing child is a good current digital photograph.
  • 34% of U.S. parents do not know their child's exact height, weight and eye color.
  • An estimated 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 10 boys will be sexually victimized before adulthood. Only 1 in 3 will tell anyone about it.
  • 1 in 7 youths online (10 to 17 years-old) received sexual solicitation or approach online. 34% had unwanted exposure to sexual material - pictures of naked people or people having sex.
